UAE announces tougher traffic fines; know here

Abu Dhabi: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has introduced new traffic penalties, with fines of up to AED 2,000 (Rs 45,123) and a vehicle impound period of 60 days.

On Thursday, the UAE Ministry of Interior (MoI) announced new fines for social media platforms, emphasizing that their aim is to ensure social safety.

The purpose behind these regulations is to establish order and enhance safety, especially during emergencies and severe weather conditions.

Article 1 of Ministerial Decision No. 130 of 1997 and the implementing regulations of Federal Law No. 21 of 1995 were amended.

These updates aim to amend specific provisions of Ministerial Resolution No. 178 of 2017 to include additional points to enhance traffic safety in emergencies, valley runoff, rainfall and many other situations.

UAE’s new traffic fines are

  • Rain gathers in valleys, flooded areas and near dams.Motorists who do so face a Dh1,000 (Rs 22,562) fine and six demerit points
  • Enter a rain-flooded valley no matter how dangerous it may be. Drivers who do so face a Dh2,000 (Rs 45,123) fine and 23 demerit points. Their vehicles will also be impounded for 60 days.
  • Obstructing the relevant authorities to regulate traffic; Ambulances and rescue vehicles during emergencies, disasters, crises and rains; In flooded valleys. Motorists who do so face a Dh1,000 (Rs 22,562) fine and four demerit points. Their vehicles will also be impounded for 60 days.

It is not uncommon for authorities to issue driving alerts in the UAE during periods of heavy rain, advising motorists to stay away from areas prone to flash floods and road disruptions.

By imposing tougher penalties, the UAE aims to promote responsible driving practices and reduce the occurrence of dangerous situations on the roads.

The measures reflect the government’s commitment to putting public safety first and addressing potential hazards on the highway.
