The co-founders of a Dubai-based architecture firm have created a radical design that could transform the city’s skyline.

The proposed design will surround a gigantic 500-meter ring called the Downtown Ring throughout Downtown Dubai and near the Burj Khalifa. The structure has a perimeter of three kilometers.

They were designed by Najmus Chowdhry and Nils Remess of Znera Space; the artist’s illustrations of striking designs bring a transformative appeal to the downtown area and Burj Khalifa.

The architects of Znera Space are a group that designs structures, focusing on experimental design that addresses socio-economic and environmental issues. The system will be broken down into smaller units containing public, private and commercial spaces and will be self-sustaining and self-sufficient.

“Like we saw with The Line in Neom, Saudi Arabia, Downtown Circle is designed to inspire emotions in those who see the design. We hope it starts a conversation about the possibilities of modern architecture,” explains Chowdhry. The duo created this design in the midst of a pandemic that challenges our ideas of how we live in cities, especially skyscrapers.

When asked if the structure was scalable, without elaborating on how much it would cost to build a project like Circle, Chowdhry said: “It takes time, a lot of manpower, a lot of resources, and a project like this requires a lot of shrink time and project.”

The ring will be supported by five vertical beams or columns 500 meters high. The span of the ring itself will consist of two main rings, linked together by a continuous green belt called Sky Park.

“Different natural scenes and climates are recreated within successive Skyparks, anticipating a dynamic journey for visitors and residents,” Znera Space said on its Instagram page.

“Visitors can experience canyons, dunes and plants of various flora. Swamps, waterfalls and tropical vegetation or digital caves, waterfalls, fruit trees and flowers of various shades and species collectively enrich the green ecosystem,” the post added.

Additionally, a fleet of suspended peripheral pods will transport passengers from one node of the downtown ring to another.

“These dangling ships reach their destination via the underlying rail network,” Choudhury said. The delivery service will operate a special mat for the drone.

The design for Downtown Circle was originally an entry in a design competition launched by the Dubai Future Foundation.

“We submitted designs two years ago and were told ours had been shortlisted. However, since we hadn’t heard back from them in a while, we decided to publish the illustrations,” he explained.

“We tried to push the boundaries by using architecture as a medium,” said Chowdhury. The pair also believe that participating in and presenting the competition design is necessary for the next phase of the program’s development. “When Covid-19 hit, we thought about how to cut off liquidity and the need for a more sustainable structure,” he added.

Znera Space is no stranger to creating radical design ideas. The duo’s Smog project, a vast network of towers that absorb pollution and recycle it into breathable air, was shortlisted for the 2018 Experimental Future Project of the Year award at the World Architecture Festival. The duo also created the design for the world’s first vertical mosque.
