The co-founders of a Dubai-based architecture firm have created a radical design that will transform the city’s skyline.
The proposed design would encircle the entire Downtown Dubai and Burj Khalifa neighbourhood, forming a giant 500-meter-tall ring known as the Downtown Ring. The structure has a perimeter of three kilometers.
They were designed by Najmus Chowdhry and Nils Remess of Znera Space; the artist’s illustrations of the eye-catching designs give the downtown area and Burj Khalifa a transformative appeal.
The architects of Znera Space are a structural design team focused on experimental design that addresses socio-economic and environmental issues. The system will be broken down into smaller units containing public, private and commercial spaces and will be self-sustaining and self-sufficient.
“Like what we saw with The Line at Neom in Saudi Arabia, Downtown Circle aims to stir the emotions of those who see the design. We hope it starts a conversation about the possibilities of modern architecture,” explains Chowdhry. The duo have created designs during the pandemic that challenge ideas about how we live in cities, especially skyscrapers.
When asked if the structure would be scalable, Chowdhry did not elaborate on how much it would cost to build a project like Circle, saying: “It takes time, a lot of manpower, a lot of resources, and with a project like Circle it takes a lot of compression time. and engineering design.”
The ring will be supported by five 500-meter-high vertical beams or columns. The span of the circle itself will consist of two main rings linked together by a continuous green belt called Skypark.
“Different natural scenes and climates are reproduced within the continuous sky park, heralding a dynamic journey for visitors and residents,” Znera Space said on its Instagram page.
“Visitors can experience canyons, dunes and plants from different flora. Swamps, waterfalls and tropical vegetation or digital caves, waterfalls, fruit trees and flowers of various colors and species together enrich the green ecosystem,” the post added.
In addition, a fleet of suspended peripheral pods ferries passengers from one node to another in the inner city circle.
“These suspended ships travel through the underlying rail network to their destinations,” Chowdhury said. The delivery service will operate a special platform for the drones.
The design for Downtown Circle was originally an entry in a design competition sponsored by the Dubai Future Foundation.
“We submitted our designs two years ago and were told our designs had been shortlisted. However, since we hadn’t heard back from them for a while, we decided to publish the illustrations,” he explained.
“We tried to push the boundaries by using architecture as a medium,” said Chowdhury. The duo also believed that participation and presentation of the competition design was necessary for the next phase of the program’s development. “When Covid-19 hit, we thought about how to cut off mobility and the need for more sustainable structures,” he added.
Znera Space is no stranger to creating radical design concepts. The duo’s Smog Project, a network of giant towers that absorb pollution and recycle it into breathable air, was shortlisted for the 2018 World Architecture Festival’s Experimental Future Project of the Year award. The duo also designed the world’s first vertical mosque.
