On Wednesday, United Arab Emirates (UAE) astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi introduced his friend who has been with him during his six-month space mission.
On Twitter, Al Neyadi shared two photos in which he introduced “Astrobee,” a cube-shaped robot with blue and white lights.
“Meet my friend #Astrobee!” Al Neyadi tweeted.
“It’s a free-flying space robot that assists us with everyday tasks, science experiments and educational activities. Astrobee and I are preparing something special. Stay tuned!” he added.
About Astrobee
- According to the NASA website, Astrobee is a free-flying robotic system developed by NASA to help astronauts reduce the time they spend on routine tasks.
- This can include documenting experiences, stocktaking checklists and educational activities. Astrobee can also take pictures.
- The Astrobee system consists of three cube-shaped robots, Honey, Queen, and Bumble, some software, and a docking station for charging. It is about 32 cm wide.
- The three robots use electric fans to propel themselves, allowing them to fly in the microgravity environment of the International Space Station.
- The Astrobee robot builds on knowledge gained from operating SPHERES (Synchronized Positioning, Engagement, Reorientation and Experiment Satellites), which have been operating on the International Space Station for more than a decade.
