Dubai Municipality has confirmed that Dubai residents need not worry about cancer-causing shampoos and personal care products being recalled in the US as they are not sold in the emirate.
The announcement comes after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned that certain vaping personal care products began circulating on social media due to their carcinogenic benzene content.
Unilever has recalled several popular brands of aerosol dry shampoo, including Dove, after it found they were contaminated with a cancer-causing chemical called benzene. Brands Nexxus, Suave, Tresemmé and Tigi, which make Rockaholic and Bed Head dry shampoo, were recalled, according to a notice posted on the FDA’s website Friday.
The municipality called the public’s attention to news and rumours of consumer goods, while reiterating that products sold in the US market are not the same as those sold in the UAE due to different environmental conditions and different specifications in each region.
All locally manufactured, imported and traded products are subject to an integrated control system from port inspection to import and trade to ensure they meet stringent health and safety standards.
Additionally, licensed trade bodies in Dubai conduct regular inspections and administer samples to verify compliance and safety of consumer products displayed and/or traded.
The Dubai Municipality has advised the public to contact them if they have any questions or to report any adverse effects that may be caused by the use of any personal care product. Residents can get in touch with the municipality through their call centre at 800900 or through MONTAJI in the Dubai Municipality Smart app.
