Authorities in Sharjah confiscated 755 bird-sounding devices used to attract and kill birds. The Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) said it also rescued 10 migratory birds. Authorities have fined Dh40,000 worth of fines for four violations during the 2023 wild bird migration season.

Hunters use illegal sound-making devices to attract birds. Poachers then set up nets to catch the birds. Some also release birds of prey, such as falcons, to hunt – a practice that is illegal.

In Sharjah, the executive committee banned the hunting of wild and migratory birds. Another decision bans the trade, sale, possession, use and import of devices that produce wild bird calls.

The EPAA said it cooperated with the police to make the first arrest and fine of Dh10,000 on March 2 in the Khedira area.

On March 8, the EPAA seized bird calling devices in the Al Blaidah area. Authorities imposed a fine of Dh10,000 for the offence.

Police and the EPAA raided a farm in the Suhela region on March 21, where officials seized more bird call devices. On the same day, authorities rescued endangered migratory seabirds in the Al Khudaira area. Both offenses carry a fine of Dh10,000.

EPAA Chairman Hana Saif Al Suwaidi said: “We are passionate about carrying out tasks related to maintaining and protecting the environment and spreading environmental awareness throughout society. Therefore, dedicated teams patrol the various areas to detect and prevent poaching and confiscate illegally used Devices and equipment to carry out these inhumane acts. They also run awareness campaigns about the dangers of poaching migratory birds and the need for residents to refrain from this practice.
