Abu Dhabi: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Monday signed a cooperation agreement with the World Health Organization (WHO) to support the Al Makassed Hospital in East Jerusalem worth US$25 million, according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM).
The agreement was reached in cooperation with the World Health Organization and in coordination with the UN Middle East Peace Process Coordinator’s Office to implement the directives of President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Sultan Muhammad Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister for International Development at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said the signing of the agreement is “in the framework of the UAE’s permanent, historic and unwavering commitment to the Palestinian people and to support them in the humanitarian field, among the most important It’s the health department.”
Al Shamsi said more than 130,000 people will benefit from his medical services.
Dr Rick Peppercorn, head of the WHO Office in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, said: “The generous support provided by the UAE is vital to continue to provide much-needed essential health care services through Al-Makassed Hospital.”
This support, he noted, will help “increase the quality of services in the hospital’s obstetrics and gynecology department and help provide training opportunities for healthcare professionals to serve all Palestinians.”
Notably, Al Makassed Hospital is a private charitable educational hospital in the city of Jerusalem, affiliated with the Al-Makassed Islamic Charity Association. It was established in June 1968 and has 250 beds.
The hospital is considered a major transformative hospital, receiving patients from all over Palestine. At the same time, it is also an educational hospital, training nursing and medical students and residents from different Palestinian universities.
