The UAE is once again one of the most trusted countries in the world, according to the Edelman Trust Barometer 2023. The country ranks as the third most trusted country in the world, with the trust index indicators for government, business, NGOs and media reaching significant levels for all four institutions.
Government again tops the list of most trusted institutions with 86% support, followed by business at 78%. In contrast, corporations are the only trustworthy institutions in the world.
The report, which surveyed 32,000 respondents across 28 countries, found that despite global challenges such as conflict, food insecurity and climate change polarizing society, people’s trust in the UAE is unshakable.
The drivers of this high level of trust in the UAE reflect respondents’ belief that the government, businesses and NGOs are seen as competent and ethical.
As a result, the UAE ranks highly for economic optimism – 72% of respondents believe their economy will be better off within five years, compared to just 40% globally who say they and their families will be better off within five years Better, down 10 percentage points from 2022.
Furthermore, strong trust in UAE institutions brings a sense of cohesion and unity, while globally, other countries see deep-seated polarization and weakened social fabric, largely due to mistrust of government, lack of a common identity and driven by systemic inequality.
Omar Qirem, CEO, Edelman Middle East, said: Economic optimism continues to decline globally, with 24 of the 28 countries we studied hitting record lows and 53% of global respondents saying their country is more divided today than in the past . “While this cycle of mistrust has exacerbated global polarization, the UAE has once again bucked the trend to emerge as a highly unified country in the 2023 Edelman Trust Barometer report.”
“The UAE’s well-defined long-term social and economic policies have made the country one of the most popular and popular destinations in the world, attracting expatriates, businesses and tourists, while preserving the country’s unique cultural heritage and identity,” Qirem said.
“As trust levels in the UAE continue to remain high, businesses and CEOs will speak out on social issues such as climate change, discrimination, the wealth gap and the treatment of workers. Together, business and government can play an integral role to Achieve results that move us toward a more just, secure and prosperous society,” he added.
Four other areas in which the UAE excels:
The power of brands creates shared identities: As many as 75% of respondents believe brands have the ability to celebrate shared interests and strengthen social fabric.
All four agencies are considered reliable sources of information in the UAE: All four agencies are trusted sources of reliable information, with government sources considered the most trustworthy.
Experts are trustworthy: Experts and leaders such as journalists (61%), scientists (84%) and CEOs (68%) are trustworthy.
CEOs Should Take Action: Nearly 79 percent of respondents want their CEOs to have a voice on global challenges like climate change, while 84 percent want leaders to support Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI).
