UAE believes Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia talks on Renaissance dam ‘within reach’

[ad_1]

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) believes the “successful completion of negotiations” between Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia over the controversial Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is “according to a statement posted on the website of the Permanent Mission of the United Arab Emirates (UAE)” within reach”. The UAE is at the United Nations on Tuesday.

In a statement, the UAE described the GERD dam as an excellent opportunity to strengthen regional integration and cooperation, welcoming all three countries to participate in the negotiations led by the African Union (AU). The dam has been criticized by Sudanese and Egyptian authorities since construction began in 2011.

Sudanese authorities have long complained that the recent reclamation of the Blue Nile dam constitutes a unilateral action that violates legal obligations agreed by Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt in a 2015 Declaration of Principles. Ethiopia started the third stage of filling the dam in July, Egyptian media reported.

Sudan and Egypt want Ethiopia to reach a legally binding agreement on the operation and filing of the dam, with assurances that they will receive a certain amount of Nile water, fearing it will reduce their share of the river.

The GERD dam is 40 kilometers from Sudan’s eastern border. Sudanese authorities have asked Ethiopia to provide real-time data on dam operations to ensure the functionality of its own Nile hydroelectric dam and prevent future flooding.

The UAE stated that it believed that the 2015 Declaration of Principles on GERD remained the underlying reference point for the remaining negotiations.

dam, Ethiopia intends to fill it, and Impact on Sudan And downstream Egypt has been the subject of intense and often fruitless negotiations.
