UAE braces for record tourist numbers in February

The UAE’s tourism industry is bracing for a record number of tourists in February, state news agency WAM reported on Friday.

The country is expected to maintain a sustainable tourism recovery in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, driven by events including the International Defense Exhibition (IDEX), which opened in Abu Dhabi on February 20.

With COVID-19 restrictions lifted in most countries by 2022, Abu Dhabi has welcomed a total of 4.1 million hotel tourists, up 24% from 2021, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

UAE nationals will account for the largest proportion of hotel guests in 2022 at 29%, equivalent to nearly 2 million guests.

Indian nationals came in second with 12%, up 31% from the same period in 2021. British, Egyptian, Filipino and Saudi Arabian nationals followed at 4% each.

According to the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), Dubai will welcome 11.4 million tourists between January 2022 and October 2022, a year-on-year increase of 134%.

According to DET, the average hotel occupancy rate in Dubai between January 2022 and October 2022 is 71%, one of the highest in the world.

Events expected to further boost visitor numbers include the 28th Gulfood, which opens in Dubai on February 20.

The Sheikh Zayed Festival, which will take place in Abu Dhabi from January 25 to February 25, is also expected to attract visitors with its motorcycle show featuring professional motorcyclists and drift car drivers from around the world .
