UAE business: Businesses can greatly benefit from sustainable development: Dubai Dialogue

During Dubai Dialogue 2022, industry experts discussed how businesses in the UAE and abroad can reap huge benefits by integrating sustainability into their supply chains.

The event was organized by the Dubai Chamber’s Responsible Business Center earlier this week.

Embedding sustainability throughout the supply chain was the theme of the annual conference, which was attended by more than 150 participants representing various economic sectors in the UAE. Presentations and discussions highlighted the role of best international practices as well as advanced technologies aimed at making supply chain processes more efficient and environmentally friendly.

The panel explored different strategies that companies can integrate into supply chain operations that can create long-term value and positive social impact for stakeholders and enhance their environmental, social and governance (ESG) value and reputation.

Speakers and panelists included Hassan Al Hashemi, Vice President, International Relations, Dubai Chamber of Commerce; Dr. John E. Katsos, Associate Professor of Business Law, Ethics and Social Responsibility, American University of Sharjah; Albert Kraak, Chief Operating Officer, DP World Logistics; and Managing Director, Scan Global Logistics, UAE Ayman Kabbara; Sherif Hafez, Supply Director, Middle East and Africa, MARS; Kenneth Nymann-Buus, Supply Chain and Procurement Specialist.

Al Hashemi noted that businesses can maximize their positive impact by making significant changes and adopting the right solutions that can enhance operations and competitiveness across their supply chains.

“Recent research makes a strong business case for embedding sustainability into supply chains, and the benefits of doing so are far-reaching. By adopting this approach, companies are able to reduce costs, increase efficiency, foster innovation and generate higher investment return,” Al Hashemi said.

He noted that businesses committing to this journey should take a holistic approach, requiring careful planning and effective processes to identify risks and opportunities and assess their impact and progress.

“Once again, the Dubai Dialogue conference proved to be an ideal platform for hosting thought-provoking dialogues that addressed key sustainability-related issues affecting businesses in the UAE and abroad, and outlined practical steps companies can take to reduce their impact on the environment. influence and create a positive example that will inspire others to follow in their footsteps,” he noted.

He concluded by elaborating on the important role that the Dubai Chamber and its Center for Responsible Business play in mobilizing businesses across economic sectors to adopt responsible practices and support Dubai’s mission to become a global leader in sustainable development.

During the panel discussion, Kamel Mellahi, Senior Manager, Center for Responsible Business, Dubai Chamber highlighted the need for business leaders to go beyond compliance and target global best practices and standards. They highlighted the importance of focusing on stakeholder engagement, collaboration, transparency, data analysis and reporting to shape sustainable supply chain systems.

Panellists also highlighted the importance of fostering public-private sector partnerships and collaborations that can coordinate the efforts of industry stakeholders and maximize the impact of sustainability-focused initiatives, strategies and practices .–TradeArabia News Service
