UAE calls for immediate lifting of Taliban ban on women’s higher education

[ad_1]

The UAE’s ambassador to the United Nations has condemned the authoritarian Taliban regime after the draconian government banned women from universities in Afghanistan. Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs and Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, made a very harsh statement on Wednesday about the retrogressive laws recently imposed by the Taliban. On Tuesday, Talibani’s Ministry of Higher Education immediately banned women from entering Afghan universities. Following the ban, protests broke out in different cities in Afghanistan, including Kabul. As women took to the streets chanting anti-Taliban slogans, men joined the protest and walked out of the university. Several protesters were beaten and arrested, and the Taliban responded violently to the protests.

“The UAE strongly condemns the Taliban’s recent decision to ban Afghan women and girls from higher education,” Nusseibeh said in a statement. The UAE stressed that the decision seriously jeopardizes the international community’s efforts to engage the Taliban in Afghanistan. interests of the Afghan people. It further called for a “swift” reversal of the Taliban’s decision as it violated “basic human rights and is contrary to the teachings of Islam”.

The UAE emphasized its support for Afghanistan’s commitment to sovereignty and stated that “the UAE, in cooperation with regional and international partners, will remain steadfast in its long-term support and commitment to the sovereignty, stability, security and prosperity of Afghanistan.” Meanwhile, delegates from the United States, Germany, the United Arab Emirates and several other countries have condemned recent decrees that impede the rights of women in Afghanistan.

Taliban defend ban amid global criticism

The UAE ambassador is not alone in condemning the retrogressive decree passed by the authoritarian regime. U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken criticized the ban on Twitter, writing: “Deeply dismayed by the Taliban’s announcement that women will be denied a college education. Afghan women deserve better. Afghanistan deserves better. The Taliban have just clearly thwarted their goal of international acceptance.”

On the other hand, the Taliban government’s higher education minister said the move was because the female students “did not comply” with the Taliban’s interpretation of Islamic dress codes, The Guardian reported.
