Cyber attackers are using ChatGPT to launch ransomware attacks, a senior UAE government official said on Wednesday.

“Early this year there was an emerging trend of ChatGPT being used in some ransomware and phishing attacks. We investigated this together with our partners and it was really clear that adversaries are using it more and more,” said UAE Government said Dr Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, head of cyber security.

During his keynote address on the second day of the sixth CSIS Cybersecurity Innovation Series conference in Dubai on Wednesday, he said adversaries are designing tools that use many aspects of ChatGPT to launch attacks.

“ChatGPT is used to reprogram and add some ransomware scripts. Attackers use it for email phishing or drafting emails. In fact, we saw some of them,” Al Kuwaiti told Khaleej Times on the sidelines of Wednesday’s conference.

Technologists on the first day of the conference also warned that artificial intelligence is being used by cybercriminals to carry out attacks.

“Recently we had a massive attack on the government side and we were able to stop and block our infrastructure with the help of our partners,” Al Kuwaiti said.

He added that recent cyberattacks have targeted the electricity, energy, transportation, aviation, education and healthcare sectors.

“Ransomware attacks are mainly concentrated in the financial sector. When we investigated, we found that many financial sector players are making good use of the cloud,” he said, adding that bilateral and multilateral cooperation with Interpol, Europe and other players With the help of cooperation, imposing sanctions on ransomware attackers will help reduce cyberattacks.

He reminded that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by attackers is a threat to infrastructure and that the UAE government also uses AI to defend and protect its infrastructure from cyberattacks. “Technology is like a two-edged sword. You can use it for good or bad.”

The cybersecurity chief added that the government is continuing to build a culture of cybersecurity in all aspects of life, including education.

“As part of Vision 2030, Vision 2050 and Centenary 2071, many curricula have been updated and integrated with cybersecurity digital transformation. All authorities and ministries have adopted cybersecurity in all their curricula.” About Spreading Cyber Culture A new network pulse of consciousness has been activated,” Al-Kuwaiti added.

He noted that cloud security policies are already in place and the team is very capable of working and innovating with many of the laws.

“We need everyone in the community to help raise awareness to ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to cybersecurity,” he concluded.
