Abu Dhabi: Artificial intelligence-guided radiation therapy, targeted therapy for liver cancer and chemotherapy robots are some of the innovative options that are transforming cancer treatment in Abu Dhabi.
They are available at the new Fatima bint Mubarak Center at Mubadala Health Partners Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.
The center is modeled on the Taussig Cancer Center at the Cleveland Clinic in the United States. Taussig is one of the top cancer care providers in the US, and the Fatima bint Mubarak Center is equally focused on the UAE.
Officially inaugurated in March, the center covers an area of 19,000 square meters. It has 32 exam rooms, 24 private infusion rooms for intravenous administration, two operating theaters and an area dedicated to women’s oncology services.
AI guided therapy
One of the treatment technologies the center has introduced to the UAE is Ethos adaptive radiation therapy, the hospital said. Using artificial intelligence and machine learning, Ethos allows radiation therapy medical teams to adjust a patient’s treatment plan in real time based on daily changes in the patient’s anatomy.
Previously thought to be impossible, the AI-assisted process significantly reduces adaptive therapy time, with sessions lasting just 25 to 30 minutes. The technique also reduces radiation exposure compared to more traditional treatments. While the machine is suitable for all cancer types, it is currently being used primarily for pelvic, abdominal, bladder and prostate cancers, the hospital statement said.

The center also offers radioembolization, TARE-Y90 therapy, a minimally invasive targeted therapy that uses radioactive particles to destroy cancer cells in the liver. The procedure involves injecting tiny beads called microspheres into blood vessels that supply blood to liver tumors. These microspheres emit radiation that targets tumor cells while sparing healthy liver tissue.
This treatment is especially useful for people with liver cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, as it can help shrink tumors that may be inoperable and reduce symptoms such as pain and fatigue. For selected patients with liver cancer, radioembolization is a safe and effective treatment option that improves their quality of life and prolongs their survival.

The Fatima bint Mubarak Center is also home to the chemotherapy robot, which utilizes automated compounding processes to ensure the safety of nursing staff and patients. The robot can easily and accurately prepare patient-specific hazardous doses, improving patient and operator safety, ensuring pharmacist efficiency and reducing operating costs. Additionally, it increases caregiver confidence, facilitates automated record keeping, and simplifies inventory management.

The center has also introduced other advanced treatment programs that use the latest technology, improving the chances of successful treatment for patients. This includes Edge radiosurgery, another accurate and non-invasive cancer treatment that uses stereotaxic radiation to target cancer cells while sparing healthy cells. Brachytherapy, or internal radiation, on the other hand, places radioactive material within the affected organ, allowing high localized doses of radiation to be delivered to specific areas of the body, and therefore produces fewer side effects than external beam radiation.
