UAE, Chinese institutions sign nuclear energy cooperation agreement

[ad_1]

DUBAI, May 7 (Reuters) – The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), the agency responsible for developing the United Arab Emirates’ nuclear energy sector, has signed three agreements with China’s nuclear energy organization to boost low-carbon nuclear power development.

The UAE, which will host the COP28 climate summit this year and wants to source 6 percent of its energy needs from nuclear power as part of its 2050 net-zero emissions plan, has previously said China would be a key partner in its energy transition plans.

The three memorandums of understanding (MoUs) cover cooperation in nuclear energy operations, high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, and nuclear fuel supply and investment, ENEC said on Sunday.

They respectively signed contracts with China Nuclear Power Operation Research Institute, China Nuclear Industry Overseas Corporation and China Nuclear Energy Industry Corporation.

The UAE is already building the first multi-unit nuclear power plant in the Arab world, the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi, which is being built by the Korea Electric Power Company (KEPCO) <015760.KS > put up.

When complete, Barakah will have four reactors with a combined capacity of 5,600 megawatts (MW) – equivalent to around 25% of the UAE’s peak demand.
