DUBAI – UAE:- The UAE Climate Council, headed by Her Excellency Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, discussed priorities for the country’s climate agenda at its first meeting, held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE).
Her Excellency Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri said: “The current acceleration and exacerbation of global climate change impacts requires enhanced cooperation and expanded action to achieve net zero emissions. Thanks to the forward-looking vision of its wise leadership, the UAE is making a It’s leading the way.”
She added: “By creating a joint framework that is aligned with the direction of national leadership, the council seeks to coordinate the efforts of government entities and increase the private sector’s contribution to our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and achieve climate neutrality. This will help We build a sustainable future that enhances the UAE’s position and competitiveness, and supports the country in meeting its voluntary commitments to the Paris Agreement.”
As a priority, Council members received a briefing on the progress of the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategic Initiative, launched in October 2021. They explored mechanisms for developing strategies for the implementation of the initiative, including a current assessment of emissions and their sources, the legislative framework needed to achieve its goals, assessment of potential climate change challenges and related mitigation measures, and alignment of national emissions reduction plans with sustainable economic Growth remains consistent.
Participants also reviewed initiatives launched by MOCCAE to foster private sector engagement in achieving net zero emissions, including the National Climate Ambition Dialogue – a series of stakeholder meetings for priority sectors such as industry, cement, transport and waste, promoting sectoral climate Efforts — and the Emirates Climate Responsibility Corporation commitment, which aims to drive emissions reductions across the country.
The next item on the agenda is an overview of an updated version of the UAE’s second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, which raises the country’s climate ambitions and greenhouse gas reduction targets. In addition, members discussed the UAE’s participation in the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) to be hosted by Egypt in November 2022.
The UAE Cabinet, led by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, approved the establishment of the UAE Climate Council in May 2022. The committee’s mandate is to recommend and coordinate federal and local strategies, facilitate joint projects with the private sector, propose public and sectoral programs and projects related to climate change mitigation and adaptation, develop and monitor the implementation of the 2050 Net Zero National Strategy, review and update the UAE’s NDC and report on the country’s contribution to the implementation of the Paris Agreement. Furthermore, it is tasked with highlighting climate action in the UAE, promoting participation in international conferences and other events, and advancing scientific research in related fields.
The new committee is made up of eight representatives from federal government entities, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, as well as the Ministry of Education, the Office of the UAE’s Special Envoy for Climate Change and the General Directorate of Civil Aviation. The seven members are from local government entities namely Abu Dhabi Environment Agency, Sharjah Dubai Supreme Council for Energy, Environment and Protected Areas, Ajman City and Planning Department, Umm Al Quwain City, Environmental Protection and Development Authority Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah Environment Agency. Several private sector representatives were selected to serve on the Council in accordance with special criteria for the preparation of greenhouse gas inventories issued by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for carbon-contributing sectors and in line with the methodology used by the global carbon-emitting sector. These include Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Emirates Global Aluminium, Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) and United Cement.
