An Abu Dhabi resident has been ordered to pay his ex-wife Dh10,000 for the treatment of a premature baby.

The woman filed a lawsuit against her ex-husband, official court documents said. Doctors advised her to terminate the pregnancy early, citing potential risks of complications and chronic disease, she said.

After giving birth prematurely, the baby girl spent several months in an incubator, during which time the woman spent Dh10,000 for treatment. The insurance company that covers the mother’s insurance refuses to pay for the child’s treatment.

Due to a family dispute, the couple divorced when the woman was pregnant. When the woman’s ex-husband refused to pay for the child’s medical bills, she asked him, saying he had no money. She had to find other ways to settle her medical bills, eventually taking him to court.

After hearing from both sides, the Abu Dhabi Family and Civil Administrative Court directed the man to refund the Dh10,000 his ex-wife had spent on the treatment of the child. The man was also told to pay his ex-wife’s legal costs.
