The number of new Covid-19 infections is on track to hit the double-digit milestone after a 12-month gap, a trend that has raised hopes of entering the final stages of a long-running pandemic.

On Saturday, the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention announced 101 new cases. The last time the number of infections was recorded below 100 was on December 13 last year when 92 cases were reported. The UAE are once again eyeing the double-digit psychological mark.

The country has emerged from the pandemic through the perseverance of frontline workers and the shrewd guidance of visionary leaders. Authorities lifted all restrictions and precautions earlier this month as the number of cases plummeted. This week, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (Seha) closed its Covid-19 screening centers in the capital Al Ain, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah.

Dr Niyas Khalid, an internal medicine specialist at Abu Dhabi’s Burjeel Medical City, said life in general and ongoing festive celebrations without restrictions or wearing masks showed that the pandemic was entering its final phase.

“The pandemic is entering its fourth year. It has been a protracted battle and the UAE has responded firmly through mass vaccination and screening campaigns, supported by responsible public behaviour. The latest trends in the UAE bring Great hope. We may very well be in the final stages of a pandemic.”

Despite the lifting of restrictions, the number of new infections has continued to decline over the past few weeks.

Dr Ramesh Bhaskaran, a specialist in internal medicine at Aster Hospital in Qusais, Dubai, said the scene was a proud moment for everyone, especially those who bravely fought the dreaded coronavirus. Fight frontline workers.

“It is encouraging to see that the number of Covid-19 cases in the UAE is approaching double digits. The UAE’s fight against Covid-19 has been a model for the rest of the world. The way we have responded to the pandemic without disrupting the economy is proof It has improved the efficiency of the UAE healthcare system. For frontline workers like us, this achievement is something to celebrate.”

However, with flu cases rising, Dr Khaled urged community members to take precautions wherever possible.

“We must continue to take precautions throughout the holiday season and beyond. Since we have seen several flu cases this season, these precautions will also help reduce the number of new flu infections,” Dr Khaled added.
