Motorists who fail to stop after being injured in a traffic accident face jail time or a minimum fine of Dh20,000, the UAE public prosecutor has warned.

Authorities have been running traffic campaigns time and time again on various platforms to educate motorists about hit-and-run traffic violations. You must stop immediately and notify the appropriate authorities.

“Anyone who, without an acceptable excuse, fails to stop a traffic accident caused by or against him and resulting in injury to a person will be sentenced to imprisonment and/or a fine of not less than Dh20,000,” the authorities said in a social media post on Saturday. wrote in an article in the media.

This traffic offence is detailed in article 49, paragraph 5, of the Federal Traffic Act No. 21 of 1995.

Four steps after an accident:

1. Remind relevant departments

Report a traffic accident at 901 or through the Police app. In the event of serious injury, you must dial 999 for an ambulance. Minor accidents can be reported through the police app.

2. Obtain a police report

The most important document to identify in the event of a collision is a police report. Without this, you could find yourself in serious trouble, both legally and financially. It is illegal to make any repairs without a police report. For incidents reported through the Dubai Police app, incident reports are sent via SMS to all parties involved within 24 hours of completing the app process.

3. Contact the insurance company

Contact your vehicle insurance company as soon as possible and let them know that you have been involved in a traffic accident. Also, make sure that all accident-related documents are available.

4. Seek help when the vehicle is severely damaged

If the vehicle suffers significant damage and is unsafe to drive, your insurance company is usually obligated to send a rescue truck to tow your car to the nearest certified garage.
