A driver who chased another driver on a main road, obstructed him, then reversed and deliberately hit his car has been told to pay Dh20,000 in compensation.
The Abu Dhabi Court of Appeal overturned an earlier ruling by a trial court that dismissed a compensation claim from a driver who was obstructed by the defendant.
The man has filed a lawsuit against the motorist seeking to pay him Dh115,000 for material and moral damages he suffered as a result of the accident, which put him at risk and damaged his car.
The complainant said he was driving on the main road when the defendant chased his car and blocked his way twice. He said the accused stopped on the road when he pulled up in front of him. The defendant then reversed and intentionally hit his car, causing damage to it.
The accused was earlier convicted in criminal court and jailed for six months after being found guilty of reckless and endangering the life of a motorist. The court has awarded Dh51,000 to the victim.
The plaintiff in this case filed a civil lawsuit against him for compensation.
Lawyers for the accused have filed a memorandum with the court seeking the case to be dismissed as the man had earlier been awarded compensation in criminal court.
The Abu Dhabi Family and Civil Administrative Claims Court earlier issued a ruling dismissing the case. The plaintiff challenged the decision of the Court of Appeal, which quashed the first ruling and directed the driver to pay Dh20,000 in damages.
He was also told to pay the plaintiff’s legal costs.
