Severe condition left patient with chronic pain for more than nine years
In UAE hospitals, calls for help never go unanswered. And this time SEHA telemedicine service from abroad, about 11,000 kilometers from Abu Dhabi. Doctors at Tawam Hospital in Al Ain responded quickly to the call and the patient flew in and successfully performed minimally invasive spine surgery to relieve her severe spinal pain.
Dr M Ziad Aljian, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Tawam Hospital, part of the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), noted that the patient suffered from severe spinal disease causing chronic and debilitating pain for more than nine years. The adverse impact on her quality of life and barriers to care in her home country convinced her to consider medical tourism.
“Patients contacted us through our telehealth service and were in excruciating pain at the time of diagnosis. Our team at Tawam was well equipped to provide medical assistance to overseas patients in need. Minimally invasive spine surgery was a success. The next day, by Physiotherapy, the patient was mobilized. She was discharged after three days. She returned to her home country two weeks later and was monitored by our team through regular telemedicine follow-ups. Today, she is living a normal, pain-free life, said Dr. Aljian.
The patient had a severe L5S1 disc problem and contacted Dr. Aljian after learning about it. He has had success in complex spine surgery.
“We heard about Dr. Ziad Aljian. When he looked at my MRI, he agreed there was a problem and I needed help,” the patient said.
Dr Aljian noted that this case is a shining example of Abu Dhabi’s growing medical tourism landscape.
