Electric scooters and cyclists who break the rules in the UAE capital face fines of up to Dh500, authorities have warned.

Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipal and Transport (DMT) Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Police, announced on Thursday that they have begun issuing fines for breaches of personal use bicycles and e-scooters regulations in Abu Dhabi .

Both parties stated that the goal is to implement the highest standards of security and safety, to promote positive behaviour and to comply with the provisions of safe social regulations.

According to the authorities, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi’s regulations on the use of bicycles and e-bikes stipulate the amount of fines for non-compliance. Fines range from AED 200 to AED 500 for the following: non-compliance with safety instructions and standards, or violations of cycling on prohibited roads and areas.

Last week, authorities said they had stepped up measures to crack down on e-scooter riders who violated the rules. Police noted that bicycles, manual and electric scooters are allowed in Abu Dhabi. Police also released a video in which they can be seen banning electric scooters with seats in the capital.

Officials noted that cyclists must wear helmets and obey the rules of the road, and a bicycle or e-scooter should have only one rider.

In its latest statement, ITC confirmed that the new regulations on the use of bicycles and e-scooters are part of ITC’s efforts to diversify modes of transport and build an integrated and sustainable transport system with relevant strategic stakeholders This improves the quality of services available to community members and supports ITC’s preference for environmentally friendly transport in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The ITC also said that bicycles and e-bikes are one of the “first and last mile” services that connect bus stops, shopping centers, services and residential areas, promoting the integration of transportation networks, allowing community members to quickly reach their destinations and The cost is very low.

Authorities said the regulations on riding all types of e-bikes and bicycles clearly stipulate that cyclists must wear protective helmets and reflective clothing at night, and that bicycles can only be parked in designated areas and cannot be left anywhere within reach. Obstruct the passage of vehicles or pedestrians and do not tie them to traffic light poles or street light poles.

The rules also stipulate that cyclists and users of micro-mobility devices can only use bicycle lanes and roads, and if the area they want to cycle in is not available, they must use trails with a speed limit of usually 20km. hourly, and they must stay on the far right side of the road or on sidewalks and sidewalks dedicated to the use of bicycles.

Bicycle safety instructions and procedures must be followed at all times, and any stunts that cause danger or damage to riders, pedestrians or any other road user must be completely avoided.
