An educational institution in the UAE has been ordered to refund Dh73,000 in tuition fees it received from residents. He paid two students to study courses in the UK.

The Arab man paid his son and nephew to attend an academy in London, but they never received tuition fees.

The man filed a lawsuit against the country’s educational institution seeking Dh56,000 in damages and Dh100,000 as compensation for mental and material damages, court documents said.

The man said the local agency agreed to enrol the boys in classes in London and was told to pay Dh56,000 and showed the receipt in court.

He went on to say that when the boys headed to London, no one picked them up at the airport, unlike what was promised.

They then took a taxi to the hotel. However, the father later got a call from the college saying they never received the fee and would only enrol after paying the same.

When the man contacted Al Ain’s educational institutions, they did not answer his questions directly. He then had to arrange the remittance elsewhere for immediate payment.

In its defence, the academy said it had registered the students for courses in London, purchased tickets for them and arranged their hotel accommodation.

However, it added that there was a miscommunication between the management of the two branches of the academy over the payment of student fees.

After hearing from the parties and based on the evidence presented by the plaintiff, the Al Ain Court of First Instance directed the educational institution to refund Dh48,000 to the Arab father, as well as Dh25,000 in damages.
