A man in his 60s has been jailed for three months for sending inappropriate video clips to a young Arab woman via SnapChat, according to a ruling issued by the Ras Al Khaimah Misdemeanors Court.
The offender was also fined Dh5,000 and given a three-year suspended sentence. He will then have to pay Dh30,000 in compensation for the moral damage he caused.
In her complaint to RAK police, the woman reported that she had received video footage of the man “trying to lure her.”
When police questioned the man, he admitted to sending the video. Based on this statement, together with the evidence presented by the prosecution, the court found the accused guilty.
The woman then filed a civil suit against the man, demanding Dh50,000 in compensation for the moral and psychological damage she suffered as a result of the incident.
Sexual harassment contributed to her depression, she said. She added that she hoped the man, who was almost the same age as his father, would “encourage good morals, but his behavior is just the opposite”.
After hearing all parties, the RAK Civil Court issued a verdict directing the man to pay the woman Dh30,000. He was also ordered to pay the victim’s legal costs.
