Emiratis working in the private and government sectors have praised the government’s move announced on Tuesday to give Emirati citizens working in the government sector a one-year leave with half pay so they can start their own businesses. The program will start on January 2, 2023.

“It’s a great opportunity for young Emiratis. I’ve been encouraging my husband to start his own business, but of course there’s the fear of failure, and the fear of losing your job. If you start a project and it fails , you will spend months before you can find another job,” said Ahlam Al Marzooqi, group emirates manager at Galadari Brothers.

“If you have a year, then you can go all out. Even a small home business or a cafe, you can really get your business up and running in a year, and then you can go back to work and do it afterward. monitoring,” she said.

Without that kind of flexibility, many people would rather spend time with their families after get off work than start a business, she explains — the fact that one doesn’t work for a year is not a waste of time, but an investment in oneself.

“You’ll learn how to run your own business; you’ll learn by doing things yourself. You’ll make connections and learn skills, so you come back to the office stronger,” she says.

Mohammed Abdulrahman, who has worked in the government for more than 30 years, said the initiative will help Emiratis start a pilot project for their future, especially after retirement. “You can spend time thinking about and building your future. If you’re going to start your own business, you’re testing in some way how you’re going to be successful,” he said.

He added that it was a great initiative and a fantastic opportunity for anyone with a business idea. “If someone has an idea without a job, it’s hard to start without taking a risk, or getting a loan to start a business without a backup plan or other source of income,” he said, adding that it was one of those businesses reason of failure. “You don’t have anything to support your needs, and then the business just drowns,” he said.

On the other hand, if one is working and wants to start a business, the risk of leaving to start one is also high, especially if one has a family, he explained. “The government is giving everyone this opportunity [who wants] Start your own business, maintain your own role and half your salary.

It’s a good move to test their idea, their project, and then if it doesn’t work, they have something to fall back on,” he added, adding that if it worked, it would be a good retirement plan .

He also said that as more people start businesses, the field of employment will increase as new businesses create new jobs. “It’s a win-win situation for everyone. I think it will be successful and hopefully a lot of people will take advantage of this initiative,” he said.

Shouq Al Marzooqi, who has worked in the government for 15 years, said she would love to develop herself and serve her country by starting a new project, but time was not on her side due to her hours in the office. “I want the flexibility to have time to work on my projects without losing my current job,” she said.

Echoing her sentiments, Alia Mohammed, who works in the private sector, said it was a great move for workers looking to start their own businesses as it provided them with job security. “This is an opportunity to explore the world of entrepreneurship with support from government and organisations,” she said.

First announced in July this year by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the initiative aims to enable Emiratis to start their own entrepreneurial journeys while retaining government jobs .

According to WAM, it is one of the “Big 50 Projects” initiative and the first of its kind in the world. Emiratis will receive half of their salary during this period and T= leave will be approved by the head of the federal authority where the employee works and can be combined with unpaid leave and annual leave.

Emirati national employees of the federal government can check the conditions and requirements for self-employment and entrepreneurial leave through the website of the Federal Government Human Resources Authority www.fahr.gov.ae.
