UAE ENEC signs MoU with Chinese nuclear energy company

Barakah Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) in the United Arab Emirates has signed three agreements with Chinese nuclear entities to advance their cooperation in promoting the development of low-carbon nuclear power.

The three memorandums of understanding were signed with the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations, CNNC Overseas and China National Nuclear Corporation.

The first agreement covers cooperation in nuclear energy operation and maintenance, the second agreement will focus on high-temperature air-cooled reactors, and the third agreement aims to promote cooperation in nuclear fuel supply and investment.

ENEC Responsible for the development of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, the first operational nuclear power plant in the Arab world.

The plant, considered a global benchmark for other countries seeking to diversify their energy mix in times of international energy crisis, delivered three units in three consecutive years, generating up to 4,200 MW of baseload, reliable, clean electricity.

When completed, the Barakah nuclear power plant will have four reactors with a combined capacity of 5,600 megawatts, equivalent to nearly 25 percent of the UAE’s peak demand.

UAE promotes clean energy

Meanwhile, construction on the Barakah power plant began in 2012 and has progressed steadily since then, with construction of Unit 4 entering its final stages.

The plant is a powerhouse for sustainable development, energy security and stability in the UAE, creating high-value jobs and stimulating local industry, in addition to delivering significant environmental benefits to the country for the next 60 years and beyond.

ENEC announced in February that its operations and maintenance subsidiary, Nawah Energy Company (Nawah), had begun commercial operations third unit Baraka factory.

The third unit increases the total capacity of the Barakah plant to 4,200 MW, contributing more than 80% of Abu Dhabi’s clean electricity consumption in December 2022.

The plant reduces carbon emissions by 22.4 million tonnes per year, leading the UAE in decarbonisation efforts. Barakah’s Clean Energy supports the sustainable development of Abu Dhabi businesses by providing clean energy certificates.

ENEC is investing in research and development (R&D) and innovation to further accelerate nuclear energy opportunities in the UAE’s clean energy transition.

These include the export of clean electricity, the development of net-zero molecules (including clean hydrogen and ammonia) and steam, and significant opportunities for overseas investment and financing of new clean energy projects.

ENEC sees Barakah as a major factor in the success of its programme, which includes being a current and future leader in international investment in nuclear technology.

The plant is expected to pave the way for the development of new carbon-free energy sources such as industrial fuels, as well as the production and export of hydrogen. Barakah is a source of advanced heat and steam for heavy industry, and it fosters growth and innovation through research and development in aerospace, medicine and agriculture.

The UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program aims to support the country’s pioneering role in the international energy sector, including the launch of major projects in the field of renewable energy and energy transition.
