In addition, the embassy emphasized the importance of efforts aimed at supporting the political process and building a national consensus on forming a government.

Sudan’s main paramilitary groups said on Saturday they had seized the presidential palace, the army chief’s residence and Khartoum International Airport in an apparent coup attempt – but the military said it was fighting back.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which blamed the army for attacking them first, also said they had taken over airports in the northern city of Merowe and El Obaid in the west.

The situation at the scene is unknown. The military said it was fighting the RSF at sites the paramilitary group claimed they had seized, and denied that the RSF had taken Merowe airport.
