The Filipino Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Dubai has reminded Filipino expatriates returning this summer not to buy fake air tickets to skip online appointments to obtain Overseas Employment Certificates (OECs).

Philippine Labor Commissioner John Rio Aceveda Bautista told the Khaleej Times that they caught some Filipinos who presented fake or doctored tickets to enter MWO and verify their employment. contract.

Work contract verification is a prerequisite to obtaining the OEC, which serves as an exit pass and document attesting to the legality of recruiting and employing Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

Allotment from presentation of verified contract, passport and visa, need to present confirmed air ticket to MWO, this is an appointment transaction to obtain OEC.

Bautista noted that only a handful of people are still showing fake tickets, unlike last year when MWO saw large crowds and long lines outside its premises

“We would like to remind our kababayans (citizens) not to present tampered tickets or stamps to MWO as this constitutes a violation for subsequent penalties,” Bautista said, explaining: “This is a form of misrepresentation that may lead to Administrative lawsuit against workers. It could also be a bogus criminal case.”

Bautista also clarified that the MWO considers emergencies and that in some cases people do not need an appointment to get an OEC.

“If it’s a real emergency, people can go to MWO without an appointment. They just need to show their ticket and provide proof of the emergency,” Bautista explained. “Then they can apply for the OEC in the Philippines before returning to the UAE,” he added.

“If it’s about contract verification, they can start submitting requests online every Monday at 8am, and we have 500 to 600 slots.”

Why OFW needs OEC

Employment contract verification is a prerequisite for the issuance of an Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC). All OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) are required to have an OEC before returning to work overseas.

The OEC is actually an exit pass, a document that certifies the regularity of OFW recruitment and documentation.

The OEC will be handed over to the immigration officer at the departure airport in the Philippines. OFWs who leave the Philippines without an OEC may be prevented from leaving the country by immigration officials.

OFWs holding OECs are exempt from tourism tax and airport terminal fees in the Philippines. Their spouses or dependents are also entitled to a reduced travel tax.

Filipinos working in Dubai and the Northern Emirates obtain employment contract certification at the Filipino Migrant Workers Office located at 2C Beirut Street, Al Qusais 3, Dubai.
