UAE, Finland strengthen economic and trade cooperation

The first Political Consultative Committee between the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Finland was recently held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Abu Dhabi.

Non-oil bilateral trade between the UAE and Finland will increase by 9.5% between 2020 and 2021. The total is currently $274.7 million. The UAE has maintained diplomatic relations with Finland since 1975.

The meeting was chaired by Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for Political Affairs and Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, and Kai Sauer, Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Security Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Finnish affairs.

They reviewed the bilateral relationship and discussed opportunities to strengthen the relationship through cooperation on areas of mutual interest such as economic development, technology, climate change, and international peace and mediation.

The two sides agreed on concrete steps to strengthen and expand trade and economic relations, including opportunities to deepen business-to-business linkages and foster entrepreneurship. The two countries affirmed their joint commitment to address the challenge of climate change and advance climate security.

They discussed concrete initiatives to collaborate on these issues ahead of COP28, which will be hosted by the UAE in 2023 at Expo 2020 Dubai. The committee reviews the global political situation, including the latest regional developments in the Middle East and Europe.

The two countries expressed their mutual commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict and the role that regional and international organizations can play in this regard. They concluded by emphasizing the importance of concrete, actionable outcomes for their consultation and ongoing review process to ensure agreed goals are met.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC) and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate cooperation in attracting foreign investment and building capacity.

The two entities agreed to strengthen the UAE’s image as a desirable destination for trade and investment, primarily by enhancing the efforts of the UAE missions abroad to promote and facilitate investment opportunities within the UAE.

The MoU establishes a framework for MoFAIC to facilitate trade and investment meetings through its missions abroad, participate in information exchanges, and develop the capacity of the diplomatic mission in the areas of investment and trade promotion.

ADIO also committed to working with UAE stakeholders and entities to participate in a series of workshops dedicated to UAE diplomats to provide an overview of Abu Dhabi’s investment climate and priority sectors.

Dr. Abdulnasser Alshaali, UAE Ambassador to the Republic of India, said: “This MoU comes at a critical time and brings together MoFAIC and leading investment promotion entities in the UAE to support the UAE’s economic diplomatic goals. The MoU will enable “Emirati diplomats are able to leverage on ADIO’s network and experience to strengthen their trade and investment promotion skills and increase their understanding of the UAE business environment. I strongly believe that this MoU will deepen the strategic partnership with ADIO and MoFAIC and ultimately enhance the UAE’s capabilities of missions abroad.”

Welcoming the move, Abdulla Al Shamsi, Acting Director General of ADIO, said: “ADIO is delighted to partner with MoFAIC to work together to further strengthen Abu Dhabi’s position as the business destination of choice for global companies.

Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh, UAE Minister of State, and Matti Anttonen, Permanent Secretary of State for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, had earlier convened the virtual meeting of the UAE-Finland Joint Committee. During the meeting, the two sides discussed foreign policy issues of mutual concern.

In his speech, Al Sayegh affirmed the strength of the bilateral relationship between the two countries and highlighted the growing cooperation between the UAE and Finland over the years, including the growing economic and cultural cooperation between the two countries since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1975.

“The convening of the first meeting of the UAE-Finland Joint Committee is an important step in advancing bilateral cooperation and coordination between the two governments. The UAE considers Finland an important partner in trade, economic exchange and tourism, and we look forward to expanding growth and development through the activities of the Joint Committee.” A shared opportunity for prosperity,” Al Sayegh said.
