New Delhi, 31 August
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar arrived in the UAE on Wednesday for a three-day visit aimed at accelerating economic ties with the key swing state in the Gulf and clarifying negative comments about the Prophet Mohammed by the former BJP office chief.
During his first meeting in Abu Dhabi with Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, he welcomed the UAE’s commitment to building a harmonious and cohesive community.
As well as reaffirming India’s commitment to tolerance, Jaishankar will be keen to further push the economic quartet, or “I2U2”, which held its first summit in July, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Israeli Prime Minister Yar Lapid.
The summit focused on two specific projects, with an initial investment of US$1.33 billion, to secure Indian farmers’ access to markets in West Asia, and to establish clean energy projects in Gujarat, making India a renewable energy supply chain hub.
Jaishankar will also co-chair the Joint Committee and Strategy with his counterpart Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan dialogue. The two sides will review the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), explore how to increase investment by the UAE sovereign fund in Indian infrastructure, and assess the current regional and international situation. Prime Minister Modi visited Abu Dhabi on June 28 and met with the UAE President. This follows a virtual summit on February 18 to sign the India-UAE CEPA. The two leaders also attended the I2U2 summit on July 14.
