UAE: Google Doodle celebrates Emirati poet Ousha bint Khalifa Al Suwaidi

[ad_1]

Google is celebrating her today (November 28), because on this day in 2011, a prestigious event honored her contributions to literature. During the event, famous poets and writers read Ousha Al Suwaidi’s poems, as well as poems written for her.

She was 15 when she first achieved national fame in a male-dominated literary field. In 2010, at the age of 90, Osha won the award at the 11th Sharjah Classical Poetry Festival.

She was later awarded Abu Dhabi’s highest civilian honor, the Abu Dhabi Award, presented by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.

Her Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, named her “Fatat Al Arab” (Arabic Girl), replacing her previous nickname “Fatat Al Khaleej “. In 1989, Sheikh Mohammed dedicated a poem from his first collection of poems to Ousha.

In 2011, the poetry world also established an annual award for Emirati poetess in the name of Ousha Al Suwaidi. The library of the Emirates International School and part of the Dubai Women’s Museum have also been established in her honor.

Ousha Al Suwaidi died in 2018 at the age of 98.
