Global rights professionals can nominate themselves or be recognised by their firm to be eligible for either of the two categories
Publishing rights professionals will now be eligible for new awards announced by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA).
The timetable will be distributed at the 12th Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) Publishers Conference in 2022; it aims to encourage rights professionals and promote the growth of the industry.
The premiere Sharjah Rights Connection Awards will be divided into two distinct categories: one for individual professionals selling translation rights with publishing companies; second, for independent professionals or those working with specialized agencies, selling book rights to publishers dealers and other licensors.
Announcing the new awards, SBA Chairman Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri said: “Over the past decade, the SBA has proudly placed rights transactions at the centre of our activities, aptly reflecting its central role in the publishing industry. Protecting creators Copyright and related rights are critical to disseminating knowledge and ensuring the sustainability of the global publishing industry.”
Launched in 2011, the Publishers Conference established the Copyright Translation Grant Program to support translation of works in all languages. SIBF translation grants have enabled the publication of 1672 books in 41 languages. Promoting its program at the annual SIBF Publishers Conference is important for encouraging many new connections across the copyright trading world, with a special emphasis on incorporating new markets and publishers into the trading mix.
The SIBF Publishers Conference takes place ahead of the annual Book Fair and is a powerful platform for buying and selling rights, signing book deals, exploring translation opportunities, and serving other business interests in the industry.
“Rights professionals play a key role in protecting the intellectual capital of ideas from infringement or unauthorized use, enabling authors and creators to work freely and enhance their creativity,” added Al Ameri.
“Our new awards for rights professionals reflect the vision of His Highness Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of Sharjah and Ruler, to foster the development of an intellectual, cultural and creative environment in Sharjah and the UAE, And support the growth of the global publishing industry.”
Submission Criteria
Global rights professionals can nominate themselves or be recognised by their company to be eligible for either of the two categories of the Sharjah Rights Connect Awards.
Submissions must be submitted in English and accompanied by two 500-word letters of recommendation from clients that the nominated professional is currently working with, explaining why they should win the award. Only individuals can apply, team submissions are not accepted.
Applicants must state the category they are applying for and their personal contact details. They can also voluntarily provide up to 1,000 words of information on business growth, successful deals, innovations, partnerships and other achievements in the previous year, with supporting images.

Registration for the inaugural Sharjah Rights Connect Awards will open on September 18 and close on October 7, 2022. Winners will be announced at the 12th SIBF Publishers Conference in November 2022. To apply for the award, global rights professionals can submit an application on the SIBF website.
