Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, representative of the Al Dhafra Regional Ruler, visited Das Island to lay the foundation stone for a new hospital and residential complex. The infrastructure expansion marks a major milestone in ADNOC’s low-carbon growth strategy as it intensifies its efforts to safely and sustainably deliver the maximum amount of energy the world needs with the lowest emissions.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed said: “I am proud to see the real progress ADNOC is making in building a more sustainable future for all. The world needs more and cleaner Energy, and the UAE is leading the charge. In the Year of Sustainability, ADNOC’s efforts to increase gas capacity and decarbonize operations will help accelerate the world’s energy transition.”

Upon arrival at Das Island, Sheikh Hamdan was received by Dr. Tayba Abdul Rahim Al Hashemi, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Chairman-elect of COP28, Managing Director and Group CEO of Adnoc, Ahmed, CEO of Adnoc Offshore, CEO of Adnoc Gas Mohamed Alebri and various senior managers and officers of Adnoc.

Sheikh Hamdan first visited Das Island, during which he was briefed on the production facilities, the outstanding technologies used and the key projects currently under development. He also toured the control room, where he was briefed on the role of the UAE national staff who manage the gas production plant, and heard about ADNOC’s comprehensive strategy for gas production and its aim to achieve self-sufficiency in gas in the UAE.

During his visit, Sheikh Hamdan met with ADNOC employees and reiterated the commitment of the UAE’s wise leadership to continue investing in the development of Emirati nationals to ensure they contribute positively to the country’s growth and prosperity. He praised the important role of Emirati women, stressing the need to continue to empower them in various fields, especially in energy, where they specialize.

Located 160 kilometers northwest of Abu Dhabi, Das Island is a key piece of the UAE’s infrastructure and the centerpiece of ADNOC’s ambitious gas growth plans. Natural gas, as a low-carbon-intensity fuel, will play an important role in the energy transition, and global natural gas demand is expected to increase in the coming decades. The new residential complex will be a key enabler for ADNOC to expand its gas production capacity to support the UAE’s gas self-sufficiency, industrial expansion and economic growth, and increase export capacity to meet growing global demand.

The island will also become a power hub as ADNOC decarbonises its offshore operations. In 2021, the company announced a Dh14 billion deal to build the first subsea transmission network in the MENA region. The network will connect ADNOC from its offshore operations at Das Island to the onshore grid and has the potential to reduce its offshore carbon footprint by up to 50%. The project is part of ADNOC’s wider strategic plan to invest AED55 billion in signature decarbonization projects by 2030.

The expansion plans for Das Island will include new housing estates and there are plans to increase women’s accommodation and services. Adnoc plans to become a regional leader in diversity to attract the best Emirati talent to future-proof its business. As part of Aramco’s sustainable development strategy, the percentage of women in technical positions will double to 25% by 2030.
