UAE: Heavy summer rains boost agricultural production-News

[ad_1]

In the late 1990s, the country began to sow clouds and gradually gained momentum.

A government official said that the summer rains in the UAE in recent weeks will help boost the country’s agricultural production and free crops from pests and diseases.

Muhammad Al Dhanhani, Director of the Department of Health and Agricultural Development of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, said that summer rainfall has a positive impact on the country’s agricultural production.

“Rain water also washes away fruits, leaves and branches and removes insects,” Al Dhanhani told the Arab daily Al Roaya.

“Rain water stabilizes the soil and increases the percentage of water in it. Rain also helps the growth of seasonal plants, herbs and vegetation,” he added.

Al Dhanhani pointed out that reasonable summer rainfall can lower the temperature and improve the quality of agricultural production.

The official also pointed out that in addition to benefiting plants, birds and animals in the nature reserve, summer rainfall also helps to purify the atmosphere, provide water for underground wells and dams, and raise water levels.

Al Dhanhani said: “The promotion of good agricultural practices and continuous weather monitoring can help maximize the benefits of summer rainfall in the agricultural sector.”

Due to continuous cloud seeding, the UAE continued to rain in July.

Earlier, Dr. Ahmed Habib from the National Meteorological Center (NCM) told Khaliji Times In summer, the country experienced low monsoon pressure originating from India, which increased the temperature, especially in the east, and also increased the possibility of rainy convective clouds.

He pointed out that the heavy to moderate rain in July was caused by the formation of eastward convective clouds. This natural phenomenon is normal in summer.

“The country is continuing cloud seeding operations to increase rainfall,” Habib said.

Cloud seeding is a method of artificially encouraging cloud formation to trigger rainfall. It started in the UAE in the late 1990s and gradually gained momentum.

In 2019, the UAE performed 247 missions, up from 184 missions in 2018.

Cloud seeding involves driving an airplane to a cloud layer with few raindrops. The aircraft fired salt flares at the clouds to increase rainfall.

Since March 2019, NCM has also used ground seeders in its rain enhancement operations.

The new method uses environmentally friendly and alternative technologies to complement the traditional cloud seeding method, which is carried out with the help of a special aircraft.
