UAE: History of Bollywood to feature at Louvre Abu Dhabi exhibition – News

An event to explore the story of Indian cinema from its beginnings to the present

As part of the 2022-2023 Cultural Season, Louvre Abu Dhabi has announced that its upcoming exhibition “Bollywood Superstars: Short Stories from Indian Cinema” will open on January 24 and close on June 24.

The exhibition will showcase the depth and richness of the art and civilization of the Indian subcontinent through its long tradition of image-making and the diversity of the Indian film-making industry.

Through more than 80 artworks, including photographs, textiles, graphic art, costumes and more than 30 film clips, the exhibition explores the rich history of Indian cinema from its beginnings in the late 19th century to the present.

These artworks come from Louvre Abu Dhabi, Quai Branly Museum – Jacques Chirac, Army Museum, National Museum of Asian Art – Guimet, al-Sabah Collection, Raja Ravi Varma Heritage Foundation and Priya Paul Collection.

As the world’s leading film producer, India currently produces more than 1,500 films a year in nearly 20 languages, which are exported across Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Through Bollywood superstars, museum visitors will learn how Indian pioneers used emerging imaging technologies such as lithography and photography to embark on a journey from the first movie to the grand musical.

Visitors will gain a deeper understanding of Bollywood’s international success and appreciate the diversity of Indian cinema. Comprehensive exhibitions cover the history of Indian cinema, from storytelling, dance and pre-film to religious and mythological influences and the rise of Bollywood superstars.

Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, commented: “Bollywood superstars are not only a feast for Indian audiences, Indian audiences are the most important visitors to Louvre Abu Dhabi. One of the nations, but also a feast for everyone interested in the rich culture of India – the continent and its roots.”

Emmanuel Kasarhérou, Chairman of Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac said: “Bollywood superstars stand out for the quality and originality of their content. It will certainly attract visitors to Louvre Abu Dhabi.”

Screenings of iconic film clips

Highlights of the exhibition include artworks from the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s collection, such as a page from the Harivamsa series: Krishna and His Courtiers by the Sea of ​​Pandaraka (c.1820, Kangra, India); and plate armor known as the “Four Mirrors” armor (c.1600-1800, Mughals, India); and Krishna surrounded by gopis (c.1655, Rajasthan, India). Highlights on loan from partner museums include a figurine of Krishna playing the flute as a child from the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac (second half of the 19th century, Rajasthan, India); a dagger from the collection of al-Sabah (17th century Late period, Kuwait); Indian armor (18th century), from Musée de l’armée; a coat (19th century), from Musée national des arts asiatiques-Guimet. Film buffs will especially enjoy screenings of several iconic film clips that have left an indelible mark on Indian cinema history.

“This exhibition is a tribute to Bollywood that can be enjoyed by Indian film fans and the wider public,” said exhibition curators Julien Rousseau and Hélène Kessous.

Dr Souraya Noujaim, Director of Science, Curatorial and Collection Management, Louvre Abu Dhabi said: “This exhibition offers a unique insight into an artistic genre with a long history and strong influence. Visitors will discover the depth of Indian filmmaking , as it begins, and gain a unique perspective on the richness of form in its creation.”
