Holders of Israeli driver’s licenses can now drive in the UAE, and Emirati drivers can now also drive in Israel, under a new agreement.
This will benefit UAE nationals and residents, as well as Israeli citizens who relocate temporarily or permanently to both countries and wish to obtain a driving license.
“From today, you can drive in UAE with an Israeli driver’s license and in Israel with an UAE driver’s license. Drive carefully,” Amir Hayek, Israel’s ambassador to the UAE, tweeted on Tuesday.
This follows the Abraham Accords signed in September 2020 following the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The two countries officially signed an agreement in March 2022 to allow holders of UAE and Israeli driver’s licenses to obtain a driver’s license from the other country.
“During my visit, I signed two agreements. One of them is about driving licenses so that citizens of both countries can now drive freely, benefiting the Israelis who often come here and the Emiratis who will visit Israel. easier trade and more accessible shipping agreements,” Israel’s Transport and Road Safety Minister Merav Michaeli told the Khaleej Times earlier in an exclusive interview.
Michaeli also spoke about infrastructure and transportation developments during his visit to Israel.
In response to the ambassador’s tweet, people welcomed the decision. “Have fun and drive [safe]! By the way, a great achievement! Mazal tov (congratulations)! ’ said The Kroisos Newsleaf.
Twitter user Avi Kaner suggested that the next step would be to drive Teslas or Lucid Motors from the UAE to Israel, charging them in Saudi Arabia along the way — with a stop in Bahrain to visit friends, of course.
“Sweet. Well done,” said another user, Benedictus. Israel is also studying the potential of road transport with the UAE to further develop tourism and trade.
