The public and private sectors in the UAE will enjoy the next official holiday on the Islamic New Year’s Eve in August-also known as Hijri New Year or Arab New Year.
Unlike the Gregorian New Year based on the solar system, the Islamic New Year is based on the lunar system. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar.
According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Charity, the Islamic New Year is expected to be held on Tuesday, August 10, 2021. But if Zul Hijjah lasts for 29 days this month, the Islamic New Year holiday will be on Monday, August 9.
The date depends on the moon.
At the beginning of 2021, it is expected that the Islamic New Year will be From Thursday, August 12, Thus giving UAE residents a three-day weekend. However, due to changes in moon observations, the UAE will not celebrate long weekends on Islamic New Year’s Eve.
The next public holidays after August are Martyrs’ Day in November and UAE National Day in December 2021.
