The first long weekend of the year – the four-day Eid al-Fitr holiday – is all but over for UAE residents. Feeling too short? The next holiday is coming in a few months and is expected to be a longer one.
According to the UAE’s official public holiday calendar, The next breaks will be on Arafah and Eid al-Fitr or the Feast of Sacrifice. In the Islamic calendar, this would be Zul Hijjah 9-12, a four-day holiday. However, since this could happen right before the weekend, residents will be allowed up to six days off. Like other Islamic holidays, this will depend on lunar observations.
Astronomy expert Ibrahim Al Jarwan earlier revealed in a video that based on calculations, the Islamic month of Zul Hijjah is expected to begin on Monday, June 19.
This means that Eid al-Adha will likely take place on Wednesday, June 28. Arafah Day, celebrated the day before Eid al-Fitr, may be Tuesday 27 June.
Taking these dates into account, the UAE holiday could be from Tuesday 27th June to Friday 30th June. On Saturday and Sunday weekends, this translates into a six-day holiday.
The Moon Appreciation Committee of the Islamic world will meet again to set an official date and all Muslims should be invited to look for the new moon.
Eid al-Fitr, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is marked by the offering of special prayers. Muslims slaughter livestock — usually goats, sheep, cattle or camels — to commemorate the Prophet Ibrahim’s test of faith.
This festival celebrates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son on the command of Allah. Before the sacrifice took place, Allah provided him with a ram, which the Prophet then slaughtered.
