The UAE has risen five places in the annual United Nations Technology and Innovation Report, which ranks countries according to their readiness to use, adopt and adapt a range of cutting-edge advanced technologies, with a focus on green innovation. The UAE was ranked 37th in the 2023 edition entitled “Opening the Green Windows: Technology Opportunities for a Low-Carbon World”.
The report examines a range of indicators, including R&D and industry activity, ICT deployment, skills and access to finance. The UAE, the highest-ranked Arab country, has been in the “upper-middle” scoring group until 2021 and is in the “high” grouping.
The UAE’s rapid rise in the rankings over the past few years reflects the country’s efforts to expand its industrial and technological capabilities in line with its sustainable development agenda. These efforts are driven by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT), whose initiatives pave the way for innovation, technological development and the creation of green industries of the future.
National actions such as the National Technological Transformation Plan, the Industrial Technological Transformation Index, and the 300 Billion Action have helped transform China into a global center of innovation, technology and industry.
MoIAT actively encourages technology and industrial companies around the world to base themselves in the UAE to produce new technologies that can help drive sustainable industrial development, combat climate change and accelerate decarbonization. This approach is supported by the country’s Net Zero Strategy initiative. The country’s commitment to innovating in the field of climate action is one of the reasons why the UAE was chosen to host COP28 in 2023.
The UN report examines 17 “frontier technologies” including artificial intelligence (AI), green hydrogen and biofuels, highlights their potential economic benefits, and assesses each country’s ability to use, adopt and adapt these innovations.
These technologies have experienced tremendous growth over the past two decades: with a combined market capitalization of $1.5 trillion in 2020 and a potential $9.5 trillion by 2030, this presents a significant opportunity for investors. Roughly half of the latter is for the Internet of Things (IoT), which encompasses a vast array of devices across multiple domains.
Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technologies, said: “This report reflects the UAE’s leadership in developing and deploying new transformative technologies to improve efficiency, reduce emissions and accelerate the energy transition. As a global hub for innovation and talent, We are pioneering cutting-edge technologies that not only support sustainable industrial development, but also contribute to the decarbonization of other economic sectors.Through the 300 billion action, MoIAT strives to foster enabling ecosystems in which advanced technologies can flourish.This involves substantial investment in research and development , and introduce incentives and enablers for the development of technologies such as carbon capture to combat climate change.
She added: “The UAE’s robust ranking in this global index reflects the country’s efforts to expand its industrial and technological capabilities in line with the objectives of the National Industrial and Advanced Technology Strategy.
