Last week, an India-UAE joint medical delegation visited Tanzania, India’s largest recipient of credit lines in Africa, to explore investment opportunities and meet senior government officials. The purpose of the visit was to identify specific projects to work with the Tanzanian government and private healthcare providers.
Officials say India and its close allies in West Asia have come together to work together on healthcare in third countries. According to the joint India-UAE Vision Statement on February 18, which was issued following a virtual meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the then Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi (the current President), “the leaders also agreed to cooperate provide health care in poor countries,” it said. The joint delegation explored opportunities to invest in healthcare (building hospitals, diagnostic centres) in Tanzania. Famous hospitals, diagnostic centers and investors from India (
Medanta, NephroPlus, Dr Lal Path Labs, KEF Holdings, FICCI and Invest India) and the UAE (G42 Healthcare, Tamouh and Somerian), as well as representatives of the governments of both countries, participated in the delegation, the officials said.
The Indian delegation was led by Lav Agarwal, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, while the UAE delegation was led by Abdul Wahed Abdul Hakim Al Jabri, Head of Control, UAE Ministry of Foreign Aid Affairs.
The delegation had detailed discussions with Tanzania’s Minister of Health Ummy Mwalimu and visited Tanzania Tanzania Investment Center and well-known hospitals in Dar es Salaam such as Great Ocean Road Cancer Institute, Muhibili National Hospital, Saifi Hospital, Aga Khan Hospital and Hitech Sai Hospital, and discussed various possibilities for cooperation and investment potential, officials said. The Indian High Commission in Tanzania, in collaboration with the UAE Embassy in Tanzania, also organised a business roundtable for health sector professionals.
Meanwhile, a leading Indian group is also building a state-of-the-art hospital in Kenya.
