Dozens of cyclists gather as two countries celebrate 75th anniversary of independence
Dozens of riders from India and Pakistan came together to spread a message of peace and brotherhood as they celebrated the 75th anniversary of independence.
Nearly 50 cyclists from the Singh Motorcycle Club (SMC), Pakistan Riders Group (PRG) and Indian Motorcycle Riders Club (IMRC) set out early in the morning to brave dusty weather conditions across the UAE criss-cross, highlighting their unity. Accompanied by music and flags from both countries, the band created a happy image in an otherwise dreary day.
The event is the brainchild of Gurnam Singh, the founder and head of SMC. “This is a special moment for both countries,” he said. “We are neighbors. We come from the same soil. We live together as brothers in this country. We want to emphasize this to the rest of the world. Peace can only be achieved when we love, care and respect each other.”
From Warsan, the group traveled along the Al Qudra corridor before stopping for a photo at the Last Exit on Sheikh Zayed Road. The youngest rider is 18-year-old Nikita Natu, who got her bicycle license last month.
“It was my first group ride,” she said. “I was worried because my bike wasn’t as fast as the others. But they were all very understanding and helped me throughout the journey.”
The student said her passion for cycling came from her parents, who were both cyclists. “I’ve been in the back seat for as long as I can remember,” she said. “So when I was 18, the first thing I did was get a bike license. I would occasionally ride with my dad to get more experience.”
Pakistan celebrates Independence Day on Sunday 14th August while India celebrates Independence Day on Monday 15th August.
“This is a fantastic initiative by Gurnam Singh and I am delighted to be a part of it,” said Mirza Khud, head of PRG, which was established in 2019 to bring together like-minded Pakistani riders. “Being a cyclist is like being an ambassador of peace. We are delighted to spread a positive message on such a special day for both countries. We would also like to thank the UAE government for helping us arrange this ride.”
IMRC chief rider Yusuf Ali Khan also agreed that cycling helped build the bridge. “It’s the brotherhood of motorcyclists,” he said. “About colour, race, gender and boarders, cyclists come together to share their passions and help each other in any situation.”
Gunan Singh dedicated the ride to freedom fighters in both countries. “Their sacrifices helped us get to where we are today,” he said. “What they have done for their country and their people must always be cherished and cherished.”
