On Wednesday, a 12-year-old girl fell to her death from the 17th floor of her residential building in the Al Nahda area of Sharjah.
The girl, from the southern Indian state of Kerala, where her mother works as a teacher, was returning home from school when the incident occurred. The child’s father was not in India when the accident happened.
According to neighbors, police rushed to the scene but were unable to rescue the girl.
Social worker Ashraf Vadanappilly said the body of the child had been returned. “We obtained all the necessary documents and the body was sent to India for burial on Saturday morning,” he said.
The child died of head injuries, according to a death report released by Sharjah’s Al Qassimia Hospital.
It was the first such incident involving a youth recorded this year. Last year, an Arab boy jumped to his death from a balcony in the Al Majaz area of Sharjah. In 2021, a 17-year-old girl fell to her death from the 39th floor of an apartment building.
