The Israeli embassy has started issuing passports to children of its citizens born in the UAE. This was announced by Amir Hayek, Israel’s first ambassador to the country, in a tweet on Thursday night.

“Another exciting time. First Israeli passport issued to an Israeli baby born in the United Arab Emirates,” he tweeted, attaching a photo of him cradling the little baby who was granted a passport. photo.

The move was welcomed by Emirati writer Hassan Sajwani. He tweeted: “What a day!! I never thought this would be possible! First Israeli passport issued in the UAE for a baby born in the UAE Thanks #AbrahamAccords  … Thanks Sheikh Mohammed President bin Zayed.”

The news comes just months after the second anniversary of the signing of the Abraham Accords. The agreement, signed by the UAE and Israel in September 2020, makes the UAE the first Arab country to normalize relations with Israel since Jordan in 1994. The official Israeli embassy in the UAE opens in June 2021, while the UAE opens its embassy in Delaware in Aviv in July.
