The ‘Sumo’ robot workshop was one of many exciting events at this year’s fair, along with cooking competitions, children’s shows and cultural performances
In Hall 7 of the 41st Sharjah International Book Fair, the Sumo Robot Workshop opened the front line. The workshop combines learning with competition, teaching attendees how to make robots out of LEGO bricks, connect them with coded sensors, bring their “Sumo” models into the ring, and see who will become “Yokozuna, Overall Champion” .
Focusing on coding and building, this one-hour workshop for teens and adults is both about building robots and teaching participants how to code. To make their robots more powerful, each team had to program the main processor, sensors and motors.
“There is a black line in the corner of the table; the participant needs to add a color sensor, so when the robot sees black, it should turn to avoid falling off the table,” says Yazan Dardas, a computer engineer at Fun Robotics. “The robot also needs to attack other Robots; that’s the goal. A falling robot will lose the game. “
“The more complex the programming, the stronger the robot. Only that person wins the competition,” Yazan said, adding, “It’s not a real competition, but it’s fun.”
From exciting workshops to children’s programmes, cultural performances and cooking competitions, and a range of exciting and imaginative events, SIBF 2022 has something for everyone, running at the Sharjah Expo Centre until November 13th.
