Sharjah Police said multiple football fans were detained after a mass brawl broke out during the Adnoc Pro League on Friday.
Those involved in the fight were arrested and released shortly after being interrogated, authorities said. No charges were filed.
The two teams participating in the match were Sharjah and Holfakham, the latter winning the match 1-0.
Their Portuguese winger Aylton Filipe scored with a sharp header on 89 minutes, Khor Fakkan’s last-minute winner.
Sharjah tried to equalize but Brazilian midfielder Caio Lucas’ long-range shot was blocked by Holfakhan’s goalkeeper, which was cheered by hundreds of home fans at the Saqr bin Mohammad al Qassimi stadium.
The result was Khorfakkan’s surprise fifth win of the season in their 17 games.
Khor Fakkan changed their name in 2017 and only got promoted to the league in 2019. They’ve traditionally been in the bottom half of the standings and have had little success against the big men in the 14-team league.
Sharjah are one of the top teams in the league and finished second last season. With the upset win, Khor Fakkan jumped to 10th place with 19 points, while Sharjah was fourth with 34 points.
After a tense end to the match, brawls broke out in public.
