Just last month, a four-year-old died after being locked in a school bus in Qatar. Dr. Taisser Atrak has spent the past few years working to prevent this and other deaths and injuries from road accidents and drownings, and has carried out an impressive and determined campaign in Abu Dhabi.

Child safety and injury prevention are at the heart of the Abu Dhabi Prize winner, who is also the Chair of Consultant Paediatrics and Neonatology at Sheikh Shahbut Medical City (SSMC).

Since moving to Abu Dhabi from the US in 2008, Dr. Atrak has launched a campaign on children’s safety awareness on the road, at home and at school. As part of this program, he has been teaching families, children’s caregivers, teachers, nannies, pediatric paramedics and teachers First Aid on basic first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and child safety basics in cars and buses ( PedFACTs) training and bus drivers. He is known for his tireless service to the community and concern for the safety and well-being of children.

“After seeing so many preventable injuries and deaths happening, I am committed to this cause due to the lack of awareness and education of caregivers about the basic measures and skills that can save lives. Public awareness, education and training in basic skills can Saves lives and makes a significant difference in the health and safety of children,” said Dr. Atrak, US board-certified consultant neonatal consultant.

Dr. Atrak volunteers his time and funds free access to training courses and workshops that help save children’s lives in unexpected and emergency situations that require rapid response.

When asked what drove him to continue the safety campaign for more than a decade, he noted that “sustainability of such programs is important”.

“I still do home CPR training, car seat education and other initiatives with my team. Last June, we had a big event, including a booth at Galleria Mall, where we had more than 600 Families were trained in car seats and CPR. This was sponsored by SSMC in partnership with Mayo Clinic. We traveled to several councils, schools, Zayed organisations and other centres for child safety events. These initiatives were very successful and were met with great support from attendees Positive feedback and lots of likes and social media.”

Dr. Atrak has also developed several programs and health initiatives around child safety, including neonatal head cooling systems and early hearing detection and intervention. Receiving the Abu Dhabi Award, the highest civilian honor, in 2011 brought his work into focus and turned him into a role model.

“Throughout my career, the Abu Dhabi Awards have given me higher expectations and taken me to the next level, as it has opened many doors for government entities and inspired my initiatives, such as being a technologist Working with the Ministry of Home Affairs to develop a car seat law and “Working with the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Health on injury prevention initiatives and programmes. As the Abu Dhabi Awards are widely recognised, many entities have been inspired and followed our initiatives when introducing child safety programmes in their organisations. “

Dr Atrak stressed that the Abu Dhabi Awards are “extremely important” as it recognises selfless individuals who work to improve society and lead positive change.

With nominations for the awards closing on October 10, Dr. Atrak hopes community members will choose someone who will work selflessly.

“Nominate those who love to give without expecting anything in return, those who show dedication to giving back to society, those who love to work silently and shine for their work and success so that they can receive awards. Achievement and innovation are not to win awards, but to introduce winning ideas and make lasting changes in people’s lives.”

Nominations can still be submitted by visiting the Abu Dhabi Awards website www.abudhabiawards.ae.
