UAE minister meets UN chief, key partners to discuss raising global climate goals – News

Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Climate Change Envoy and UAE Chair-designate for COP28, concluded his visit to the United States, met with Secretary-General António Guterres, and engaged closely with other key climate issues Consult with UN stakeholders.

During his meeting with the Secretary-General, Dr Al Jaber highlighted the UAE’s commitment to deepening its cooperation with the United Nations on climate action ahead of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), which will be held on November 30 Held in Dubai until December 12th.

The Secretary-General expressed his deep gratitude to the UAE COP presidency for its cooperation and accepted the invitation of the President-elect to participate in COP28 in the UAE. Dr Al Jaber also outlined the UAE’s key COP28 priorities on mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage, climate finance and process innovation.

In this regard, the two sides discussed the urgency of closing the financing gap and maintaining the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5ºC.

Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, attended the meeting and stressed that the agendas and work outcomes of the UN General Assembly and COP28 should be mutually reinforcing and consistent. Dr. Al Jaber also met Csaba Kőrösi, President of the UN General Assembly.

The COP28 chair-designate underscored the UAE’s intention to work closely with member states to deliver COP28 for all – a conference that includes diverse stakeholders, takes responsibility for commitments and takes action on solutions.

Underscoring this commitment, Dr Al Jaber briefed the EU Permanent Representative on the progress of COP28 and potential areas of cooperation. In a meeting with UNICEF Executive Director Katherine Russell, Dr Al Jaber noted the importance of addressing the needs and priorities of children and young people at COP28.

Also in attendance were Noura Al Kaabi, UAE Minister of State, and Lana Nusseibeh, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations.
