UAE ministry deals with cement plants over use of alternative fuels

[ad_1]

UAE – The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE) and UAE RDF have signed memorandums of understanding with four cement companies – Fujairah Cement Industries, JSW Cement, Lafarge Emirates and Star Cement – which will partly use municipally produced alternative fuels UAE RDF processes solid waste (MSW) at its facility in Umm Al Quwain for its manufacturing operations.

Emirates RDF is a joint venture between leading water treatment specialist Besix, Finnish group Griffin Refineries and Ajman-based Tech Group Eco.

The UAE RDF plant in Umm Al Qaiwain is the first of its kind in the country. It processes MSW generated in Ajman and Umm Al Quwain and converts it into waste-derived fuel (RDF), which can be used to power the operation of cement plants.

A statement from MoCCAE said the deal with the cement company is part of the ministry’s efforts to promote private sector participation in achieving net-zero emissions, applying circular economy principles and establishing an integrated waste management system.

The agreements were signed in the presence of Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, representatives of the UAE Presidential Initiative Follow-up Committee, members of the UAE RDF Project Follow-up and Monitoring Committee, and the executive director of the cement plant.

The factories will start using alternative biofuels in their production activities to confirm their commitment to sustainability and to support the development of a circular economy through effective and long-term waste management solutions in line with the UAE Circular Economy Policy 2021-2031, which express.

Mariam Almheiri delivered a speech, saying: “Private sector engagement is a key pillar of the UAE’s green economy transition and adoption of a circular economy approach, the most important of which is integrated waste management. Therefore, the ministry is keen to expand collaboration with private sector entities to enhance Their effective contribution to the nation’s efforts to drive sustainable economic development and build a better, greener future.”

“Signing agreements with some of the country’s leading cement plants to partially use alternative fuels in their operations is an important step in our efforts to implement integrated waste management and reduce harmful emissions,” she said.

She added that the project has greatly contributed to the diversion of MSW from landfills, the implementation of integrated waste management and the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
