“Green Retreat” organized by the sponsor UAE Ministry of Climate Change and the environment, bringing together more than 150 senior officials from 50 government and private entities to demonstrate the country’s commitment to address climate change. A precursor to the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP28) to be hosted by the UAE later this year, the event was held in Dubai Expo City under the theme ‘Uniting for Climate’. Through collaboration and innovation, the retreat highlights the nation’s most important initiatives for climate action, environmental protection and sustainable development promotion. It aims to promote a joint approach to preparations for COP28, which is scheduled to take place in Dubai from 30 November to 12 December 2023.
The Green Retreat was attended by His Highness Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, President and CEO of the UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerator (UICCA); HE Mariam bint Mohammed Saeed Hareb Almheiri, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment; Abdullah Bin Touq Al, Minister of Economy His Excellency Marri; HE Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure; Dr Ho Ahmad Abdullah Humaid Abdullah Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Education; and HE Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, Minister of Culture and Youth.
Green Retreat attracted a diverse and influential audience, including senior officials from relevant federal and local government ministries and agencies, accelerator representatives, government media offices across the seven emirates, key private sector companies, and a host of prominent business leaders.
Following the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment is spearheading a collaborative effort across all government and private sectors to prepare for the highly anticipated COP28 summit .
In her speech, Her Excellency Mariam Almheiri highlighted Green Retreat’s ambitious mission to bring together national experts and strategic partners from various sectors to advance climate action in the UAE. The aim is to showcase the country’s climate efforts and standing during COP28 UAE, and to elevate its role in providing innovative and inspiring solutions to global climate challenges while promoting a climate resilient world.
She said: “The UAE’s hosting of COP28 this year and its designation of 2023 as the Year of Sustainable Development is a real testament to the vision and commitment of our wise leadership to play a leading role in the fight against climate change that affects all of humanity. UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan demonstrated the UAE’s commitment to uniting global efforts, in line with our late founding leader Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Young did the same.”
