Abu Dhabi [Dubai]January 12 (ANI): Sultan Ahmed Jaber Has been appointed President-designate of the twenty-eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP28), the official news agency united arab emirates (UAE) reported on Thursday.
Al Jaber’s appointment is at the direction of HH Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of PresPhotoidential Courts underway, especially as the world is confronted with energy, food, and water security.
The declaration underscores the UAE’s leadership in climate action in the region and its role as a global champion of renewable energy.
Notably, Al Jaber is Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT), served two terms as Special Envoy for Climate Change (2010-2016, 2020-present), and has been active in more than a dozen COPs, including the historic The 2015 Paris COP21.
He was instrumental in establishing the nation’s renewable energy trajectory, making him the first CEO to serve as COP Chairman. As Masdar’s founding CEO, he oversees its mandate to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy in the UAE, across the region and globally.
The UAE has spent more than $50 billion on renewable energy projects in 70 countries and plans to invest at least another $50 billion over the next decade. It has three of the largest and most affordable solar installations in the world, according to state media agency WAM.
As the first country in the region to ratify the Paris Agreement, the UAE is committed to raising its ambitions in this critical decade of climate action, the UAE is the first country to commit to reducing emissions across its economy and the first to announce that it will achieve this by 2050 National Strategy for Net Zero Emissions.
With the UAE officially announced as host COP28, the National High Commission was established on 23 June 2022 to oversee preparations for the conference. According to WAM, the committee is chaired by His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and includes senior officials from various authorities.
Al Jaber is the vice-chairman of the committee and oversees the COP28 Prepare through a comprehensive integrated program that aligns with the UAE’s focus on sustainable development, collaboration and cooperation with the international community.
